The inn is at the edge of the Green Mountain National Forest which boasts 500 miles of trails, winding through 350,000 acres of breathtaking beauty: along quiet streams, across rugged mountaintops, around pristine lakes. Hikers can find easy beginning walks or real challenges, from a leisurely one-mile contemplative stroll through the fields and woods of the Robert Frost Interpretive Trail to the 10-mile wilderness hike over the several summits between the Brandon and Middlebury Gaps on Vermont's Long Trail. Along the way there's always the chance to catch sight of a moose, peregrine falcon or black bear -- and of course the many species of birds that inhabit the forest.
Country Inns Along the Trail provides three to ten day packages for travelers who want to hike inn to inn around Vermont.
Silver Lake Loop Starting at the inn, the Silver Lake Loop is a great favorite for the hiker of average ability. Most hikers follow the Chandler Ridge Trail north to the lake -- it's a moderate hike along the ridge tops and the west side of Silver Lake. Silver Lake has drinking water, restroom facilities and a beautiful picnic area where you can enjoy the trail lunch we send with you. You can also take a dip in the lake while you're here. The return to the inn is along the east side of the lake and down the Leicester Hollow Trail, a gradual descent alongside a stream, between the two ridges. The total hike is 9 miles. For shorter hikes, we drop guests off at the Falls of Lana parking lot or the Silver Lake parking lot, and they hike back to the inn (about 6 miles).
Rattlesnake Cliffs The cliffs are accessible from the Falls of Lana parking lot or the Silver Lake Loop (or as part of the 9-mile Mount Moosalamoo Loop) and offer great views of Lake Dunmore and the Adirondacks to the west.
Mount Horrid Overlook A 20-minute hike north on the Long Trail from Brandon Gap to the Great Cliffs of Mount Horrid will reward you with spectacular views of the White Mountains to the east, the Green Mountains to the south and the Adirondack Mountains to the west.
These are just a few of the hiking possibilities. After dinner, we'll discuss the many options and go over the trail maps you'll be using for your hike.
Hiking Guides With maps and directions in hand, you can easily hike on your own, and most of our hikers do. Some do prefer to accompany a guide, however. A guide offers an added dimension, contributing his or her knowledge to identify flora and fauna, explain geographical features or add a historical perspective. Birders particularly welcome the wealth of knowledge provided by our experienced guides.
Through our partnership with Country Inns Along the Trail, we can also help you arrange inn to inn hiking vacations throughout the region. Just send us an e-mail and we will send you the details.
